Sleep has become an elusive goal in our house. First of all everyone tells you that you will be tired with a newborn, but you don’t really believe how tired you can be until you have a newborn. Henry is not one to miss a meal, so in the beginning he was up every 2-3 hours around the clock. We got used to it, and it became doable. Then once he got a little bigger he started sleeping for longer and longer stretches through the night, until one morning Eric and I woke up in a panic wondering if Henry was ok- our bodies telling us that we have slept way too long! Then he did it again, and again, until we had good 7-8 hour stretches!!!!
What no one tells you is that once your baby sleeps through the night- at any point in time they can decide to STOP sleeping through the night again. For the past week Henry has wanted nothing to do with 8 hours without food so he is up in the middle of the night again. The good news is most of the time he’s all business when he wakes up. Here’s his checklist:
- Wake up and realize I’m hungry
- Scream/cry until dad comes
- Wait impatiently while dad insists on changing me
- Cry some more until the bottle is here
- Eat with a fury
- Burp
- Pass out on dad’s shoulder on the way back to my room
We think he’s going through a growth spurt, and hopefully when it is done he will go back to his old sleep habits!
Sometimes he is a bit worried when he drifts off to sleep:
